6 lasting cabinet trends to make your kitchen swoon-worthy | Brand Ave. Studios

Grey and white luxury kitchen in modern style

The kitchen will always be the most important room of the home — and the cabinetry is its most defining feature. Choosing a style that fits your preferences now while also making sure those design decisions won’t feel dated in a decade is no easy task.

Though kitchen cabinets might seem like they come with a ton of options to consider, you would be surprised how focusing on the details can help you achieve the stylish, swoon-worthy kitchen of your dreams.

Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design Center experts share insights on the six ways custom cabinetry can be used to give your kitchen a fresh look you’ll love now and for years to come.

Customization

“The first thing we ask a client is ‘who is using this space’? We also like to find out what are the things they liked and disliked about their previous kitchen. Function should always come first,” Kyle Frank, Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design cabinet manager said, “and then design will follow.”

Before beginning the design, Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design likes to create a wish list of items that their clients have seen and would like to incorporate into their new design. With this information, the design team can then start designing their new kitchen space and looking for new ways to optimize the flow of the room.

“We’ll ask questions like, who is doing the cooking; if they’re right or left-handed; and what items they use most often,” Frank said. “We’ll use a blend of different types of cabinets to customize their workspace, for example, installing a hideaway space for a Kitchen-Aid Mixer. This way it’s not taking up precious counter space. The options are endless, but a timeless, swoon-worthy kitchen really starts with function first. Smart design will always be in style.”

Color blocking

From midcentury to classic Craftsman, color blocking, or two-toned cabinetry, is a trend that never goes out of style. It’s been used in previous centuries, but it still somehow feels fresh — and right now it’s back in a big way.

“The most popular approach to color blocking a kitchen is to choose white cabinets for the uppers and a color for the base,” Frank recommended. Paint is a great way to customize your kitchen and Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design Center’s cabinet companies can provide custom paint colors. With the ability to custom paint your cabinets, your options are limitless. “Selecting matching cabinets but choosing a different material or color for the island works well too. The variations in color can add a lot of interest,” Frank said. And don’t forget the hardware. The right hardware can be the crown jewel to any kitchen design.

Blue

Woods, whites and grays might be considered safe and conservative color choices for kitchen cabinetry, but blue has worked its way into the hearts of homeowners everywhere. Blue can be used to draw attention, but it can also be used as a neutral, depending on the shade.

“If you’re going to go with a color, especially in Montana where we love our earth tones, we recommend blue,” Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design experts suggested. “We’ve seen everything from sea green to dark navy. It adds a regionally-appropriate pop to our natural color palette.”

Shaker cabinets

“Shaker-style cabinets have been around for hundreds of years, and they still look chic and stylish,” Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design experts said. “They can easily blend in with almost any style or home design and they never look dated.”

Shaker cabinets are characterized by a five-piece door with a recessed center panel. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors and can have a clean, elegant look — two words that can make anyone swoon.

Built-in butcher blocks

“Maybe it’s the Montana aesthetic, but we’re seeing a lot of orders for butcher block slabs built into the countertop or kitchen island,” Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design experts said. “It’s really an example of ‘what’s old is new again.’ They work so well for the Farmhouse, Rustic style in Montana, it’s one item just about any homeowner can appreciate.”

Creative lighting

Among the latest trends in cabinetry is the addition of custom lighting. While above-cabinet lighting can add ambiance, under-cabinet lighting can serve as an efficient lighting solution for a particular area. Toe kick lighting is also becoming more common.

“Even just a dim glow can be functional,” Pierce Flooring & Cabinet Design experts have noticed. “Plus, custom cabinetry lighting can really help you show off your beautiful kitchen.”
